Tomorrow is the last day we’re focusing on breakfast, so for today I’d like to hear thoughts on whether you eat breakfast before you come in for your workout, particularly those of you who are here bright and early.  Do you eat anything before you come in?  Do you have two breakfasts, one pre and one post workout?

Please post thoughts and breakfast to comments…

  • When I do get a chance to have a morning workout I will have something to eat before and after workout. I seem to have more energy then.

  • Breakfast consisted of berries and protein powder.

  • I wait to eat b4 early morning WOD, usually have some water and then post workout is protein shake (within 30 minutes. ), I have recently added some carbs for post workout recovery.

2 hours after that I will try and eat a balanced meal, eggs/meat and some veggies….

Today I made bacon and eggs with 1 cup of strawberries and 1/2 cup of blueberries.

    E.

  • You will never find me in the gym before 8:30am… and even that’s a stretch. Definitely not a morning gal.
I had breakfast in bed today… scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, peppers and mush. And of course, bacon. Mmmmm!

Willpower at it’s finest: Yesterday I was stuck inside the Casino (I was working) and had to have a quick lunch… the only option…. McDonalds. I thought, no problem, I’ll have a salad. Nope, no salads at this one. Uh oh. Oh god… what to eat. Yup, I ordered the McNuggets and picked off all the breading. It was a sad day… cause I love McNuggets. However, my stomach thanked me… and I’m sure other casino go’ers were thinking ‘Wing Nut’.
I did however, sometimes dip the ‘chicken’ in Sweet/Sour sauce. My willpower only goes so far. :)

  • so far today my breakfast has been one orange,

  • Because I come in for 7 in the morning, I cannot handle food before then so I don’t have breakfast until after the wod. I have often wondered if this was ok or not.

Also, confession time – we went out for dinner last night and I managed to stick to meat and veggies for the meal but I did have a glass of red wine (horrors!)

Breakfast today was 2 eggs scrambled with 4 slices back bacon and celery, 1/2 grapefruit and black coffee.
Lunch will be leftover pork steak with veggies
Snack – some kind of fruit and chicken
    Dinner – not sure yet.

  • Scrambled eggs with veggies for breakie

  • Never will I eat before. I did one time and thought I might lose my breaky during the wod, which was only two eggs.

  • Well, I’ve abandonned trying to work out at 6am! The only mornings I’m in the gym is Sat and sometimes Sunday. I like to eat a min of 2hrs prior to the WOD. And, as soon as I get home, I’m hungry and eat again.
For example, today, I ate my usual: 3 eggs & 1/2 grapefruit at 7am. Did WOD from 9-10ish. Ate again at 11am: 3 eggs (always hardboiled), 1 tomatoe & 6 pecans.
I used to not eat prior to going at 8am on Saterdays but I was way to starving and light heading (dizzy) by the time I got home to eat. My energy levels seem way higher if I’ve had time to eat prior to doing the WOD.

  • ….one more thing, I forgot to confess my sins…I gave in last night and had 1 glass of red wine! I enjoyed it and I don’t regret it.

  • If i do come in early (for a 9am WOD) i will eat what i would normally eat. But save a portion of it for after the WOD. I always need to work out on a relatively full stomach. I never fill myself to the limit so i am safe with eating before i come. It could be a mental thing to – thinking that all this good food is in me so i should be able to perform appropriately – and i usually do.
I eat before a WOD and it seems to work for me.

    @Mandy
Good work you “wing nut”! I met people at pizza hut last week for the buffet…i had (no joke) a mound of crust and dough from scraping off the toppings about a foot high. Were all wing nuts…ha. Down with society!
If i was thinking i should have ordered chicken wings.

Breakfast today – Falafel House – “Protein Power” 2 poached eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, banana peppers, 2 cups of coffee, lots of water.

  • When I started crossfitting, I used to eat “1 block” (Zone) before a morning WOD – for example, half an apple / 1 egg / 3 almonds….then I tried no food but drank green tea (or hot water with lemon) to help the transition and that worked well for me.
I will never eat the morning before going to the gym – if anything, i’ll mix a cup of GREENS and drink that down…or sometimes I’ll take my fish oil.
I eat as soon as possible after the WOD (Protein + Carbs) and then I have a Protein + Fat snack an hour later.

On Sat or Sun, I’ll eat a few bites of something because I’m up longer before getting to the gym…and (like today) I stay and chat for awhile afterwards…so I pack a post-wod meal too. :-)

    Today was sheppard’s pie Pre-Wod and chicken/broccoli slaw Post-Wod…Snack was turkey sausage/apple/avocado.

  • I am in the gym at 6am almost everyday (either helping to train the on ramp class or to work out). I can’t work out without eating before. If I am working out at 6am I will get up at 4:30 so I can eat and have an hour to digest pre-WOD. If I don’t eat I find that I lack energy in my workouts and I will not push myself physically on an empty stomach. Therefore I always try to get some protein / fruit / veggies / water (and 1 coffee….) before my WOD’s. I like to have a second breakfast around 10 am as well. I like eating smaller meals about 5 or 6 times a day.

Breakfast today at 5am: 1 orange and 1 protein shake with 2 tbsp of Fish Oil / coffee with cream.

    Breakfast #2 at 9:30am: 2 eggs with homemade salsa / 1 tomato / mushrooms / 3 pork ribs / 1/2 orange / 1 banana / blackberries / melon / lots of water

  • Eggs and bacon w/ a banana and black coffee this morning. I always will have something to eat before a WOD morning or not. It is never the same and I don’t have a set routine as I understand you are supposed to change it up a bit. “Constantly varied” sometimes a little full, sometimes very full or empty.
I also had lunch at McD’s today but I had salad.

  • I feel no remorse for my glass of red wine last night, I came home from work so exhausted I was weepy… and this is only one 12-week semester of craziness, I can’t imagine someone working 60 (or more!) hours a week consistently. There isn’t any amount of money that would make me consider that lifestyle!!

Ah got that off my chest, feels better.

I used to eat before the WOD and I’d get up earlier just to fit in some digestion time. I think it adversely affected my intensity during the short metcons but helped with my heavy lifting and grinders. Now I do the WOD on an empty stomach, lately with some chai tea bc I can’t stomach plain water first thing in the morning. I do make sure to have a solid supper the day before though so I’m well fueled and ready to go. I’m usually getting my post WOD “breakfast” in about an hour after leaving the gym.

IF’d this morning bc I had an upset stomach but I had a 4 egg broccoli/onion/mushroom/bacon omelet at 11ish.

  • As it was the weekend I had breakfast an hour pre-workout: Chicken, spinach, and broccoli.

This new year, because of school schedule, I work out exclusively in the A.M. I have tried a few things and the most surprising find is that I don’t feel different under any condition. I have come in without eating breakfast (despite advice on intermittent fasting – just to try it out), I have come in after having a protein shake, and after having a breakfast smoothie (typically coconut milk, banana or apple, protein powder) and I have great energy under all three circumstances. I can only speculate as to why this would be. The only thing I haven’t tried is a larger, solid-food meal because past experience dictates that it is bad news.

The biggest affect on morning performance is sleep for me. If I get to bed before 11 the night before and sleep throughout I feel amazing. Poor sleep or late bedtime and my energy is sapped.

  • I never eat before a morning workout as I tend to feel somewhat slugish. I prefer to have a good breakfast after.

5 egg omlette with onoin, broccoli,& red pepper, after the workout today.

  • Hello from Giants Ridge!!!

Not at all a morning girl. If ever, by the evil persuasions of my husband I am forced to work out before 10 the best I used to be able to manage was toast. Anything else sits there like a rock. I have no idea what I would be able to manage now that I have gone Paleo…

    Breakie: Eggs and Sausages
    Lunch: Chili
    Snacks: peanuts, orange, jerky
    Dinner: Steak, salad, veg

All this done in restaurants or on the fly – yay me! However, as much as I managed to dodge the baked potatoe gauntlet, when my meal came with a steaming butter pan bun on it, I nearly fainted. Knowing how I would feel tomorrow is the only then that stopped me from hauling that thing down my throat.

Tomorrow we will be restauranting again…I will prevail.

  • I thought I had entered us for today but alas I guess my post in lost somewhere on the interweb. Bfast for moi and Jodi was the last of the organza bacon, left over porkchop and some veggies. I only had a small meal as I had to get out the door to hockey. Had a bigger meal of 3 eggs and a buncha peppers after.

We always try and eat something if we are coming in for a WOD and then have a larger bfast after. If no WOD then we usually have time and the stomache to eat more.
