Paleo/Clean Food Success Stories

Forget diets, this is a lifestyle!

We have already discussed changes you have seen in yourself but most of those were aesthetics, how about health changes? Asthma, blood markers, arthritis, etc.

Post dinner and success to comments.

  • Energy levels and the lack of soreness, particularly in my joints have been the two biggest factors for me. I would regularly have pain in my joints after a hard workout and would linger for days. I can’t remember the last time I had pain like I used to. It used to take me 20 min in the morning just to start feeling like I was ready to take on my day. Complete opposite for the most part. My favorite part of my transformation is the fact that I don’t feel as tired for the better part of the day. My energy is sunstained throughout the day long after my workout is over, and my mood had changed as a result of that. More energy = feeling better = having a better day.

  • Before I forget to post this…
I tried a new veggie this weekend! Celeriac or celery root, it’s an ugly hairy little white ball with celery sticking out the top.

I made the vegetable part of this recipe, yum!

I should point out that I don’t like the taste of celery but I figured I would give it a chance and I actually enjoyed it. The helpful guy in line next to me said it was used mostly for soups so my next celery root adventure will try a soup recipe.

Have the rest of you noticed that more people/store clerks comment on what you’re buying?

  • @Kimberly
Recently at Safeway I was asked if I was buying food for a restaurant…. I guess that’s what 3800 calories of clean food/day looks like :)

  • @brendan
Too funny! I usually get some comment on the volume of veggies I’m buying too, not sure what people would think if I bought my meat at the grocery store too :P And it seems like no one else eats green leafy things, I get some many questions about what I’m going to do with all the greens! I have to stop myself from pointing out that iceberg lettuce is relatively devoid of any good stuff when compared to kale or spinach.

  • A clerk actually asked me if I was celiac the other day – I guess when she was checking out my order it was all meat and veggies. I felt a little exposed. lol

    “Nope – just lifestyle..”

Glad we were done, otherwise there would have been a whole lotta questions to follow. :)

dinner: plan on dijon pork chops with grilled asparagus and spinach salad. Made my first ever pork loin roast last night and loved it! I am craving pork like crazy right now….what’s up with that?

Changes: wayyyy better digestion (I’m sure you guys don’t want the details) but man, it has really made things great!

    more energy, more balanced moods.

As for soreness and such, I am still new enough to CF that if I get sore, I get SORE!! I am still feeling the lower back from Friday’s WOD.

  • I ran into someone I hadn’t seen in years in the grocery store and we stood chatting for a while and I noticed she kept looking at my cart. Finally she says, “Is that all you’re buying – that looks way too healthy”. I just laughed and said, this is what I am running low on right now. I am tired of defending how I eat and the way I work out to people. If they really want to know, they can come ask but I don’t volunteer the information anymore.

Dinner tonight is roasted chicken and brocolini. I am also going to try making the butternut squash latkes recipe that was posted here a few days ago. Depends on time.

  • Salmon and asparagus for dinner tonight!!

  • Dinner will be spag squash and yummy tomato meat sauce.

As for health changes… I am pretty much asthmatic and allergy free since the new lifestyle. I used to be on 3 drugs to control it.. now I have weaned myself off all of them. I even have 2 dogs who I was ‘allergic’ too, and they don’t bother me anymore. No shortness of breath… no sneezing, runny nose etc. That has been the ultimate pay off. If only my mom would have known growing up that her spaghetti dinner may send me to the hospital. Those poor parents with asthmatic kids not getting all the information they need… just meds and meds thrown at them to help the kids. It’s too bad.

On the grocery store note… it’s not so much the people looking into my cart or commenting… it’s me looking into their cart and biting my tongue as the 3 yr old in the front of the cart is holding a coke. CRINGE!!!

  • @ Mandy – yup, I have always been conscious of other people’s shopping carts – we never had chips, chocolate etc. as part of regular groceries, they have always been desperation only items lol – but now I look and it takes all of me to not sound like a motivational speaker – “you know….if I could tell you you could change your life in less than three months…” lol

  • Dinner the last 2 nights – Chicken, broccoli, onions stir fried in tomato sauce

The two changes I have noticed since going paleo (note: for me this was closer to december when I joined CFW, real food challenge was when I stepped it up a little bit.) The first is my eczema has been a lot better than it typically is in the winter. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was at least in part thanks to this lifestyle. And I used to have pretty sharp pain at random in my left knee which hasn’t flared up once since the new year.

  • Most of the changes revolve around energy and recovery. I find I have more energy but can really tell when I don’t get enough sleep now. Unlike before where caffiene intake would boost me and mask any fatigue.

Supper tonight was roasted peppers and steak.

  • supper turkey burger ( wrapped in lettuce ) and a salad. Snack: blueberries and bananas with coconut milk

  • ham & cauliflower

I have a friend who is Type 1 diabetic and have been listening to what the Doc prescribed for his meals. One night I asked him if I could share my lifestyle change. As soon as I told him no carbs, he said, “I need to eat carbs with the medication I’m on”. I shut my mouth.
Every night at work I get the stares when eating my dinner and the “is that all your eating” or “could you have any more cauliflower” Yes…Yes that’s all I’m eating and yes I could have more cauliflower, but that’s all that would fit in my lunch bag!!!

    I sleep much better now.

  • @maxine It’s not that we’re not eating carbs, (I’m sure someone more qualified coudl answer) There are plenty of carbs in all the veggies and fruit we eat, LOTS! We are simply choosing better carbs which are much higher in nutrients & minerals and don’t have all the harmful imflamation causing stuff. We are defineatly eating carbs, and plenty of them. I came from a Zone backround and it really displays easily how many carbs we eat. For example in the zone diet, one apple (2 blocks carb) euqals about 12 cups of spinach salad, which is also equal to 2 Tablespoons of sunflower seeds, which is also equal to 2 teaspoons of honey and 1/2 of a banana. All fruits and veggies are carbs, we thrive on them!

  • I am having a hard time eating enough…..I can’t seem to get enough to sustain energy levels so…..I am eating now upwards of 7 times a day…….

Today I ate 7oz beef and probably 1 cup of sweet potato and 3 cups of broccoli….

  • @natalie g
Thanks Nat, the thing is, if it doesn’t look like spaghetti or bread, they don’t think I’m eating my carbs. Anyways I planted the seed maybe he will come back and ask more questions one day.
