Real Food Challenge Day 50

March 8th, 2010

A few of you have mentioned Larabars.   Obviously unpackaged real food is best, but for those times when you need something ready to go, here are a few options.  NOTE:  This is still the REAL FOOD CHALLENGE and this post is not license to replace real food with packaged food, but since you brought it up…

Larabar – Quality ingredients, but quite sweet and higher in carb content because of the dates.

Paleo Snax - Includes bars and pre-packaged jerky and nuts, good stuff, but the bars have whey protein, which you might want to avoid if you have a dairy allergy.

Elevate Me Bars – Good macro-nutrient breakdown, high in anti-oxidants and delicious flavours, including a few chocolate varieties.  Again, these have whey protein.

Raw Organic Food Bars – Organic quality ingredients, but watch out for the agave nectar, which gives it a nice sweet flavour but ups the carb content.

I’ve only heard of larabar above… but good to know there is a couple more ‘modern’ options if I’m in a pinch.
Snacks today… No nuts… gotta slim down for the big finale pic this week. hahaha. Had an apple, 1 clementine, and ’bout 15 pumpkin seeds.

Back from another weekend away – we ate on plan as we cooked our own meals. I totally confess to wishing for more variety in my snacks. I am sick to death of nuts and meat. I try to avoid too much fruit as nanners and higher glucose fruits ’cause too much of a reaction for me – so yes in a pinch it would be nice to try one of these – they would feel like a “treat”.

Dinner tonight is Mandy’s shepherd’s pie – love the leftovers
steak sandwich for lunch with salad.
“cereal” for breakie and nuts and carrots for snack.

I totally need to do better with portion sizes – work has been insanely stressful lately and its only going to get crazier in the next few months. Meals are not the problem – grazing is :S This will be my goal for the next week. As for the pics – gah

    I need another month!!! :D

Really didn’t have any snacks today. Closest thing was I threw some almond butter and vanilla into 2 eggs for supper and it functioned kinda like pancakes. Otherwise the closest thing was my greens supplement.

Most of the time I try to stay away from eating snacks between meals. But when I absolutely need to eat something I will reach for the almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, or even spurge and go for almond butter and celery.

I find the snacking aspect very interesting. A lot of the people I know that have been Paleo a while comment on their ability to go for a longer time without food if they so choose due to switching to a primarily fat burning mode (not to mention intermittent fasting). Do we really need this extra food or is it more what we are used to?

How much of our need to snack is psychological? Do we feel a need to munch as a kind of oral fixation akin to smoking (said as an ex-smoker here)?

I guess for me a large part of it is goal based. Why do we do this? Is it to lose fat? Gain more lean muscle mass? I think different goals would require a touch of a different approach. Right now I am focusing on gaining strength and muscle mass while not gaining fat, and a Paleo-ish approach, but including dairy and nuts, has worked very well so far. I think that when I want to lose more fat (which I still need to do), cutting out the nuts and a large portion of the dairy will go far to assist with that goal. It all depends on what you are looking for I guess.

    apple, carrots, banana & cucumber

I do need snacks, I do not last till the next meal if I don’t have a snack in between. It’s not my mind, it’s my stomach telling me, “ya better feed me NOW!!”

snacks were veggie sticks (carrot & celery) grapes, & some pork chunks. A smoothie for 2nd supper.

But here is my success story on the food front:

Since the day this challenge started, I have craved my go-to food of choice pizza. Two days before it started I ordered my last indulgence, it was amazing. I’ve been searching these last weeks to fill that void of deliciousness and havent’ really found anything, till yesterday in my google time I discovered this:
    http://www.cathletics.com/recipes/index.php?action=recipe&recipeID=9

Due to some good news on the family front for me, I decided to go all the way. I stuck with the crust recipe, it was quite wierd to spread a sticky paste like “dough” around on a pan, leaving me quite skeptical of how it would turn out. I had purchased the “not best choice” meats from the deli for this occation, salami with hot peppers, and salsa salami. I bought olives (not my favorite) artichoke hearts, mushrooms, red & green pepper, some leftover chicken and sundried tomato and the classic pizza sauce. I piled everything on and it was very thick. Then I dusted the whole thing generously with Italiano. I worried that the crust wouldn’t get a chance to bake, but I through it in the oven as described and poof, it was the best tasting pizza ever! Seriously, it was really, really good. I had a friend over for dinner and she said you didn’t even notice there was no cheese becuase it was so flavourful! It was a lot of work, mostly just preparing all the toppings, but it was worth every minute. I believe I have found my datenight Friday night special food. I did take a photo, I will try to upload to my facebook later tonight. I supposed it didn’t relaly look like a pizza as it was piled a mile high, more like a stirfry, but it tasted like pizza, for real.

The moral of my story, is that if anyone else was feeling the pain of missing out on thier number one food, keep searching, there is a paleo version out there, you just have to find it!!
