On Ramp #31 – SOLD OUT!

On Ramp Session #31 starts Monday, March 21st: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6:00AM to 7:00AM for 4 weeks. Our On Ramp class is a precursor to our on-going CrossFit Classes. This one-month, 12-class program is an “on-ramp” to the “highway” that is CrossFit. We will train proper exercise mechanics and techniques at relatively light loads. You will become consistent with those mechanics under the watchful eye of our coaches. Finally, you will learn how to bring up the intensity to increase your work capacity. We will be showing you movements in the beginning that are relatively non-technical, then progressively become more technical. All new members must complete the On Ramp program or a series of personal training sessions before joining our ongoing CrossFit Classes.

$150 + GST for all 12 classes. Register online or download the registration form and return with payment to CrossFit Winnipeg via email, fax, or in person.

CrossFit Games Sectional Opens Begin

We would like to remind you that we are starting to prepare for Open Sectionals 2011. Due to the fact that we will be registering as an official affiliate and hosting the workouts at CrossFit Winnipeg, we need to know how many of our members are intending on competing in the Open Sectionals.  It is very important for us to know the exact number of athletes intending to compete as we need to schedule enough time each week to accommodate all of our athletes without interfering with our regular classes.

Please note that sectionals will not have any divisions and there will be no possibility of scaling workouts. There will be six weeks of workouts starting March 15th 2011.  The “WODS” will be announced each Tuesday and we will have until Sunday at 5pm to submit everyone’s scores. Every athlete NEEDS TO COMPLETE every workout that will be posted to remain in the competition.  That being said we do not want to discourage anyone from competing as it is a great experience to put all of your hard training to the test.

If you would like to compete please email Pascal at pascal@crossfitwinnipeg.com by Monday February 21st 2011. There will be a registration fee to participate (about $50). The exact amount is not yet determined and will depend on the number of competitors. Part of the fee will go to the registration for the Open Sectionals and the remainder will be used to pay the coaches who will need to put in extra hours every week to help out with the judging and score keeping.

From CrossFit HQ:

With the first workout being announced on March 15, the CrossFit Games Open is less than a month away. Since the first WOD was announced on CrossFit.com 10 years ago, every day people all over the world have posted their results online. The Open is simply taking this process and raising the stakes.

There’s a strong incentive for success. The top 60 men, 60 women, and 30 teams in each region will qualify for Regional competition.

Individual participation in the Open will only cost $10 in the U.S. and Canada, and $5 elsewhere. Team registration will begin with every member of a team first registering as an individual. Then, one team member will pay 20 dollars to register as the team captain. It will not cost any additional fees to add team members, regardless of the size of the team. A team must consist of at least 3 men and 3 women.

Are you ready for the Open?

New Specialty Class: Gymnastics

Starting on Sunday March 6th 2011 CrossFit Winnipeg will be adding a Gymnastics specialty class to our programming. The class will be held bi-weekly on Sunday afternoons from 3-5pm. The classes will be instructed by Jackie Saunders. The gymnastics classes will focus on improving technique with all of the various gymnastics movements that are part of the CFW programming in addition to just having fun playing around with tumbling, such as cartwheels, handsprings and all other gymnastics movements.

Nicole "Tapout" Fillion

My relationship with CrossFit is a lot like the typical romantic relationship.  It starts off with those crazy “love at first sight” endorphins.  It’s all you think about and all you talk about. Eventually, the relationship grows beyond infatuation and you learn to love CrossFit for a whole host of new reasons.   I met our February member of the month during the infatuation phase.  We were at a mutual friend’s birthday bonfire and I can only imagine  raving about CrossFit non stop all night.  I ‘m sure all I talked about was this great new program I was doing with Brendan at River City CrossFit and how much fun it was.  Well, Nicole actually believed me and showed up!  Nicole might not know it, or admit it, but she is a real-life “firebreather”.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term, it’s what we call competitive Crossfitters who perform at elite levels.  Ironically, when she does compete, it is always “for fun” and “for the camaraderie”, as she humbly shines the spotlight on her fellow athletes.  It’s a shame since she really represents what CFW stands for. The fact is that Nicole possesses a level of maturity and dedication  to her training that most of us only dream of, and that is why she is a firebreather.  Congrats on all your accomplishments Tapout!

Age: 38

Height: 5.5

Weight: 136lbs

What is your favourite exercise or workout? “Cindy” or anything with squats…

What is your least favourite exercise or workout? Usually anything that involves rowing or burpees…but it always feels good once it’s done!

Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself? I used to love taxidermy…now I wouldn’t dream of stuffing my furry friends

What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport? I’ve never really made time for hobbies in my life but favorite pastimes are (being with people I love, Crossfit, Running)…favorite sport MMA (UFC)

What were you doing before CrossFit? Distance running & cycling.  Marathons, duathlons and other races.

How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg? Sitting around a camp fire in Marchand MB at a girlfriends b-day party and I met Tania for the first time…within 5 mins of conversation I was SOLD!

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg? I would have to write a whole page on this topic so my comment to this is: Crossfit. Changes. Lives.!!!!

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments? Absolutely!!! From balling like a baby after an RCCF wod that took everything I had and more to finish….to literally jumping up and down for joy after my last “Fran” wod.  One of the things I love most about our community is that is doesn’t matter who you are, what you do, how much money you have or not have, how educated or fit you are…once you walk in the CFW doors everyone is treats each other equally and with respect.  Integrity, community and strength (mental & physical) is the foundation of what we do.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg? Don’t be shy, talk to people, do the best you can do on any given day, some days will be better than others.  Pushing past your fears successfully is the BEST feeling!  Stick to it as YOU. WILL. SEE. RESULTS.

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg? After 2 and half years of wanting to clean up my diet and being unsuccessful…I finally did it!!! And I am loving every minute of it.  Eating clean feels amazing!

FrostFit Games 2011 – RESULTS

The FrostFit Games were a huge success.  Congratulations to all the athletes who competed and everyone who came together to make it happen.  It was an amazing day.  At times I found myself totally engrossed in a tiny detail of an athlete’s movement, at other times, when I was able to stand back and see the whole picture, I was overwhelmed by the energy and feeling in the room.  When I opened CrossFit Winnipeg, I imagined creating a something bigger than myself, a community that would come together at such an event.  To see it all come together was an emotional experience, almost like a testimonial or tribute to what we do on a daily basis.

We received countless compliments from athletes and spectators alike, most of them on how well organized the event was, and how smoothly the events ran.  Everyone was shocked that we stayed on schedule.  The person who coordinated all of this was Pascal, so please thank him when he gets back from Mexico next week!  I was also a bit nervous about the event selection, knowing that we couldn’t please everyone and that we wanted a good balance, without anyone getting hurt, and that we had to be smart about running the events with space, time and equipment restrictions.  After witnessing the events, any remaining worries melted away.  It was exciting to watch and I don’t think any of the athletes would say that they weren’t challenged.  Thanks to Brendan, whose creative programming helped us make it happen.  I would also like to thank my family who came through, each with their own special talents, my mom Annette, my dad Claude and my husband Steve, who did all the jobs that no one else wanted to to.  Thanks to my brother Robert agreed to take the mic and crack a few jokes for a good part of the day, and my other brother Charles, who was the statistical mastermind behind the heat schedule and score keeping.  He had some pretty crazy restrictions and variables to work with and he did a wonderful job optimizing space, time and resources.

I apologize in advance if I forget anyone as we had so many people (so I won’t name names, you’ll know who you are…)  Each of you was essential for running the event smoothly.  Next, up thank you to the volunteers who donated their Friday night and their entire day on Saturday.  That is a huge commitment and we are truly grateful that you would do this for us.

First, the judges, who had an extremely difficult and draining job.  They had to be at the top of your game all day, and deal with the emotional burden of being fair and kind at the same time.  Fantastic job, judges!

Next, we have the volunteers who set up the equipment and made sure that we had everything we needed when we needed it.  Without you, we would never have been able to stay on schedule. Many of these volunteers were close to the athletes during their workouts and did an amazing job encouraging and supporting the athletes.

Thanks also to our volunteers who assisted the athletes with the warm up area and starting the heats.  We had so many compliments from athletes saying that it was a fun experience because they always know where to be and when to be there.

Next, we have the volunteers who handled the score-keeping and the time-keeping.  The clock was something that could NOT go wrong and we had two volunteers were dedicated to just this and it went off without a hitch.  Thank you!  More thanks to the volunteers to took charge of the score- cards.  We caught a few errors and got them fixed right way.  Great work!

Thanks to our volunteers who greeted the athletes and spectators and helped them find their way around, including our hostess and our registration staff.  You did a terrific job representing CFW.  We got a bunch a compliments about how “nice” everyone was!

Last but certainly not least, thank you to the competitors, who left everything out on that floor.  You were an inspiration to everyone who was there.   You showed us why we do this and what we could be.  I am so proud of every single one of you.

I think this event will henceforth be known as “The First Annual FrostFit Games”…  Shout out to B-Mac, who came up with the name and the slogan and performed like a star on Saturday!
