The member of the month for May is Steffen “SK” Klenk. For those of you who don’t know him, SK is one of the “veterans”, or you could say, one of the “originals”, he has been around since the beginning at River City CrossFit. SK was there before I was there. He is almost a mythical figure in our community. Everyone who comes in during the day looks at the board to see what SK’s time was, because he sets the standard for the rest of the day. There are so many great things I could say about SK, about what an amazing athlete he is; about his strength, stamina, endurance and dedication. Most of us are astounded when we see the stuff he pulls off at 6am before our alarm rings. Sometimes you look at his time on the board and wonder how he could possibly do that many pullups or push-ups or burpees in so little time, but if you’ve seen him in action, you know he’s just a really great athlete with lots of heart. But despite how inspiring he is as an athlete, personally, I think the best things about SK are his smile, and his humility. Don’t worry SK, the double unders will come, and if ever you need someone to “test” your baking recipes, you know where to find me ![]()
– Coach T.
Age: 37
Height: 5’7”
Weight: 165
What is your favourite exercise or workout? Anything with muscle-ups, pull-ups or HSPU.
What is your least favourite exercise or workout? Double Unders…so frustrating but I’ll figure them out one day.
Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself? I really enjoy cooking and baking. For a while I was on a quest to make the ultimate cinnamon buns.
What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport? Anything outside…running, hiking, biking, skiing
What were you doing before CrossFit? Running
How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg? Fellow crossfitter John N invited me to RCCF one day. Two weeks later I was a member.
What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg? Physical changes and strength…the program works! All that healthy living karma that surrounds CFW does rub off too.
Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments? My first muscle-up. Took me a year to get it.
What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg? We all have our strengths and weaknesses and some of the exercises can be frustrating and difficult, especially when starting out but give it your all to get through the WOD, one rep at a time. It may feel like hell at the moment but you’ll be glad you did it when the WOD’s done.
What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg? Those mornings when the alarm goes off at 5:20 and every muscle hurts from yesterday’s WOD, the fact that I make it to the gym for the 6:00AM class is the biggest accomplishment! Once I’m there, it gets easier. Great coaches, great people, good times.

CrossFit is not just an activity I do, it has been a fantastic lifestyle change for me and I can’t see ever going back. The comments I’ve been getting backup the fact that CrossFit Winnipeg works… The coaching staff at CrossFit Winnipeg are fantastic, fun, and have your best interests at heart… Be prepared to have more fun than you’ve ever had going to a gym.
