I don’t know many people who wouldn’t see this and say “who’s that?” Most people know him as the baker of CFW and a great one he is, but more importantly, he’s a dedicated and extremely hard working athlete.
From the day he came out of On-Ramp, our member of the month Derek has put in what it takes to excel in his sport.  Always asking questions, staying after classes to work on skills and bringing us treats on a regular basis Derek is a great example of what makes us the community we are at CFW.
No matter what the workout of the day is, you can see the fire in his eyes and see that he puts 100% into everything.  Great job Derek, keep up the hard work, because as you know already, it pays off in all aspects of life!

Age: 30 yrs old

What is your favourite exercise? Rope climb

What is your least favourite exercise? It would have to be double unders, because I can’t do them yet.

What were you doing prior to CrossFit?  I worked on an oil rig in Alberta. Not much time for sports/gym but It was a little like CrossFit at times.

How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg? I found out about CFW from a friend of mine who trains at another CF box.

There are people in the world who take care of places, objects, projects, people, all sorts of things really.  And there are people in the world who take care of their own shit.  What I mean by that is that they’ve figured out how to prioritize themselves while still being there for others.  These are people who, at one point or another, had a moment of clarity and made a decision to change their lives for the better, and never looked back.  Our member of the month is just one of those people.  For those of you who haven’t had the chance to train with her, meet Karen Allan.  Karen works hard and reaps the benefits.  Behind Karen’s tough,  no nonsense, hard-working attitude is a real sweetheart.  The photo on the left is an amazing transformation – most of it done on her own, out of sheer determination.  Looking good Karen!

Age: 51
Height: 5’6”
Weight: 160’s aiming for 150’s
What is your favourite exercise or workout?  Love deadlifts, rowing, situps. I secretly love the competitiveness that it brings out in me.
What is your least favourite exercise or workout?  Rope climbing, which is one of many, many things I can’t yet do.
Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself?  I’ve lost 120 lbs over the past 3 years, almost 30 since starting crossfit.
What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport?  Cycling.
What were you doing before CrossFit?  I cycled lifelong, started walking on a regular basis a few years back then added running.
How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg?   I heard about crossfit through a friend’s daughter in Alberta.  Googled it and found Winnipeg Crossfit.  “Nasty girls” was the first of many videos I saw in my internet prowling. Somehow I was drawn to the barbells…
What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg?  Increased strength, stamina, better posture, braver to try new things, I tried standup paddleboarding this past summer, I know I never would have tried it before… so fun. I eat healthier and have incredible amounts of energy, more now than I ever remember in my life.
Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments?   When I felt how heavy 120 lbs feels to pick up; I used to wear that. Talk about a weight vest!  Also deadlifting over 200lbs, it feels awesome to be strong.
What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg? Just try anything and don’t worry about the numbers, times or scaling. Listen and ask questions to the coaches. The community here is great. I would never work out this intensely without the people.
What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg?  I feel strong, healthy and energetic and I plan to stay that way. I used to have chronic knee and foot pain when I was unfit and heavier. That is completely gone. Now I just have aching muscles from the last WOD.
 Also, lengthened telomeres, (thanks Maxim).

The CrossFit Winnipeg member of the month for October 2011 is Max Greenwood.  I don’t know many people who work as hard as he does, let alone people in their 60′s.  Max is a runner turned CrossFitter and will be happy to tell you about his “conversion”.  Max is always smiling, no matter what we are doing, he always brings positive energy to the group.  What is so special about Max is that he has an unassuming and patient wisdom that recognizes what others around him need at any given time.  It’s a smile here or a few kind words there, seemingly random, but always when you need it the most.   Max, it seems like you are always thanking CFW, but it’s time we repay the favour: Thanks Max!

Age:  64

Height:  5’10″

Weight: 155

Started On Ramp:  Feb, 2011.

Favourite Exercise/Workout: Pull ups.  Don’t ask me why.  I haven’t a clue.  I just like them.  They make some sort of symmetrical sense to me.

Least Favourite Exercise/Workout: Tire flips.  I’m not very big and I’m not very strong yet.  I don’t think there’s a part of my body that doesn’t hurt during and days after tire flips.

Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself?  I worked as a bush pilot all over the Yukon Territory,  sometimes making trips into Alaska, N.W.T. and B.C.

What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport? Favourite sport is Crossfit; favourite pastime is reading (when there’s no Bomber game on); my vocation for the last 35 years has been working with alcoholics and addicts.

What were you doing before CrossFit? I ran 40 miles a week, outside, for three years.

How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg?  Fall, 2010 I met a Crossfit enthusiast in their 50′s and they were so trim, fit and happy that I decided to try the free class.  And here I am.

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg?  I am faster, more flexible and stronger than I was 20 years ago.  I didn’t think it would show but I saw a friend of mine at a meeting who I hadn’t seen me in 9 months.  Later he said:  “What did you do?  I didn’t recognize you until you opened you mouth and spoke! You look great.”  I had forgotten the changes I had undergone in silhouette, posture, weight-change and muscle tone.

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments?  Not doing a dead lift in 3 months and seeing my PR go up 45 pounds; or a thruster in 4 months and seeing my PR go up 60 pounds.  That’s a palpable increase in strength at an age where strength increase is not easily come by.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg?  I have advice for people in their 60′s like me.  Older muscles are relatively dry and brittle, so try to drink at least 3-5 litres of fluid per day.  Also, older muscles injure relatively easily and heal relatively slowly, so sometimes it is wise to lift 40% of PR during a WOD even if younger athletes are lifting 60%  Control your own workout and go for slow, steady, safe improvement.

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg?   Intangible::  Lengthened telomeres.  Readers will have to Google that if they don’t know about telomeres and intense physical exercise.  In simplest words, your life lengthens.  No scientist has yet put an upper limit on how much your life lengthens by.  Telomeres were only discovered by Nobel Chemistry Laureates 2 years ago.  Tangible::  I am fitter.  I am healthier.  I am happier.

Miguel's Amazing Transformation

The CrossFit Winnipeg Member of the Month for September 2011 is Miguel “Big Mig” Gauthier.  Miguel’s transformation has been nothing short of amazing.  From diabetes and cholesterol to deadlifts and metcons.   For those of you who don’t know Miguel, he’s usually part of the 4pm crew.    Miguel is hard to ignore at the gym.  He’s got a big frame and an even bigger personality.  You may or may not like his musical tastes, but you have to love his heart.  He puts everything he’s got into his workouts, and with a bit of help from a great community, he’s making some even bigger changes to his nutrition and lifestyle.  Miguel, we are so proud of you and we are behind you all the way!

Love,

CFW

Weight:280

What is your favourite exercise or workout? wall balls, deadlift, bear crawl

What is your least favourite exercise or workout?reverse lunges double unders

Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself?  2 years ago the doctor wanted me to take cholesterol medications and I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.  What a difference 2 years of hard work can make!  :-)   At my last doctor’s visit, he was shocked;  all my blood work was perfect! Thank you soo much CrossFit Winnipeg, and my chiropractor, Dr. deJong.

What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport? gaming, biking, fishing, ufc, dancing

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg? I can do things now that I could never do before, like skiping rope, lifting my own body weight, and holding a plank fore 2.30minuts. I am a happier preson today.

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments? When Coach Brenden pushed me to run a 1600m run and he ran right behind me.  Half way though, I had bad craps cramps and he told me they will go away he was right.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg? If you have the will and detemination, Crossfit has the way.  This works!  If I can do it anybody can. You just have to work hard at it.  :-)

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg? Beating all the odds health wise -  that is huge for me…  thank you sooo much CrossFit!

Erika at Jeff's Wedding last weekend & before CrossFit

The CFW member of the month for August 2011 is Erika “Wipeout” Wilzer.  Erika has been with us since the River City CrossFit days and she can’t know how much she  means to me and to our little community.  First, she is an amazing role model and spokesperson for how CrossFit can change lives.  We all know people who have struggled with fad diets and trendy exercise plans, never really achieving any level of sustainable fitness or long term health and I think Erika used to be in that predicament.  She is a perfect example of someone who has found real empowerment through physical culture.  Not just physical empowerment, but the kind of confidence you can take with you through all aspects of life.  The words “I can” are very powerful.  If you get the chance to talk to Erika about her journey, don’t hesitate to do so.  She can tell you how she felt when she started CrossFit, how she struggled to get through a 400M run without slowing to a walk, how she went from counting calories and points to almost effortlessly maintaining a size 4.    She can also tell you about how she got her nickname and how far she has come with her box jumps and what a sit-up machine she has become.  She’ll tell you how it doesn’t matter if you’re a mom or even a grandma, you can do things like pullups and snatches.  I’m sure you’ll be inspired by her story too, but even better, you’ll get to know one of the kindest, most thoughtful people I’ve ever known.  Thank you for being you and for helping make CFW the community it is today, Erika!

Age: 47

Height: 5 feet

Weight: 130

What is your favourite exercise or workout?  Deadlifts – they make me feel strong.

What is your least favourite exercise or workout?  Anyone who knows me there knows I hate rowing!

Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself?  I was overweight as a child, was never athletic and hated sports

What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport?  I love to read.

What were you doing before CrossFit?  I did exercise videos (aerobics), we have a bowflex that I used, and I went to Curves

How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg?  I took a course on Healthy Living taught by the Bohemiers and Brendan taught the exercise portion of the course.  After the course was done, he invited anyone who was interested to come and check out his gym, which was River City Crossfit at the time,  so I took him up on the offer with a little fear and trembling but have never looked back.

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg?  Where do I begin?  I am healthier than I have ever been.  I am stronger and more flexible.  I think the biggest thing that Crossfit has taught me is “I can”.   I would never have pictured myself doing the things we do here.  I remember when I started I would come in and look at the wod on the board and think “I can’t do that”.  Now I come in and look at the wod and think “ok, here we go!”

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments?  Getting my first pullup – that was very empowering.   I just love the feeling after a particularly intense wod, when you’re laying on the ground trying to force air into your lungs and you think – I did it!

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg?  Keep coming in and giving it your all.  Whatever goals you want to accomplish – you will.  There is no “can’t”  there might be “can’t right now”  but eventually you can.

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg?  I think my biggest accomplishment here isn’t so much physical as it is mental.  I used to be ruled by the number on the scale.  I lived or died by that number.  When I first joined Crossfit, it was about losing weight.  Somewhere it changed to becoming stronger.  It was a huge milestone for me when I saw the magazines in January that always promote the latest “lose the holiday weight” routine and I didn’t feel compelled to buy them and try it.  When I started Crossfit I was a size 10 and I weighed 147 lbs.  I have only lost 17 pounds but I am a size 4.  The numbers on the scale don’t rule me anymore and that is so freeing.  For that I can truly say Thank you Crossfit and thanks to all the incredible coaches who make this all possible.

Regan at the Spartan Race 2011

CrossFit Winnipeg’s Member of the Month for July 2011 is Regan Windsor.  Regan seems to have come out of nowhere.  I’ve been scouring my photos folder to find an old photo of Regan when she started On Ramp, because you would barely recognize her.  She was a mere mortal when she started On Ramp about a year ago.  Now is has reached “beast” status.  I  knew Regan had reached this status when a new male member walked to the board, saw Regan’s score and said:  “Who’s this “Cobra” guy?” because  that’s who he was chasing, rx’d pullups and all.   Always ready to learn and work hard, Regan is now up on the board for some of the benchmark workouts and I know that there are many more to come.  Congrats on your amazing performance, and your amazing abs!

Age:  37

Height:  5’6

Weight: 128

Favourite Exercise/Workout:  It’s tough to pick!  I’m going to say a crazy (long) metcon that includes Oly lifts!

Least Favourite Exercise/Workout: My least favorite has been Turkish getups but they’re coming along!  The only wod I’ve ever bailed on was 100 Turkish getups…although that wod no longer scares me, I don’t hope for them either!

Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself?  I recently did the Warrior Dash in Minneapolis with a group of girls (picture is taken after ditching a muddy tank top and getting completely hosed down).  It’s a 3 mile run at a ski hill with 11 obstacles…thanks to CrossFit I actually thought it fun!!  Scale a wall with a rope? No problem!

What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport?  CrossFit of course!!  I also love reading, running, and trying new and exciting things (which is how I discovered CrossFit!)

What were you doing before CrossFit?  I played hockey for a while until I let my sister talk me into running.  I have always loved working out with weights, but have had an on again off again relationship with weight training (until now!).

How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg?  I read a lot of fitness magazines and it kept popping up everywhere – I started doing some research on it and knew I was going to love it.  I googled to see if we had one in Winnipeg and signed up for OnRamp without even trying a class!

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg?  A total transformation!  The physical changes are amazing for me to see – it’s been a long time goal to get crazy fit and I was starting to think it just wasn’t going to happen.  I have also struggled with allergies/ food issues which the Paleo diet has completely eliminated.  Of course all those things together have resulted in a much happier, healthier me.  I can’t even describe how grateful I am to have discovered CFW!

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments?  I have lots!  My first Rx’d pull-up WOD had me smiling for weeks – rip and all!  Also, every one of the encouraging words that kept me fighting hard to finish a wod; everytime I lay flat out on the floor knowing I gave it everything I have; and every time I see someone do something I never imagined could be done… and thinking maybe, just maybe, some day I could do that too.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg?  Take the time to learn proper technique, work hard, and the weight will follow.  I know how badly I wanted to Rx the WODs.   I still find it hard some days when I’m so close to the Rx’d weight not to just go for it, but I’ve suffered through going too heavy too fast before and it’s not worth it!!

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg? To to finally reach my fitness goal! Which I will now revise to “become uberFit”!  It has come through many baby steps taken over the last year at CFW…leaping into OnRamp, working through technique when I wanted to hammer out weight, giving everything I have in each and every workout, feeling frustrated with a plateau, feeling victorious with a PR, trusting Paleo through the cravings for grains, and happily getting up at 4:30 each morning to make it all happen!  Of course now I couldn’t imagine it any other way!!

Rico: all smiles

This month’s member profile is Rico Bertschinger.  Rico is a successful business man who enjoys hockey and yoga.  He works hard at the gym, but his kind easy going demeanor what stands out to me.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen Rico not smiling at the gym, even during the toughest of workouts.  Rico recently took home an “honourable mention” in our Real Food Challenge and I’m sure that men half his age would love to have his abs!  In Rico’s own words:”It has been almost a year now since I started Cross Fit. I really have enjoyed the challenge of the exercises and working out with the other Cross Fit members who make the working out a team effort which motivates me even more.   I really respect your coaches for their passion, knowledge and their dedication.”

Thanks for the kind words Rico, and keep up the good work!

SK still a good sport after multiple double unders gone bad

The member of the month for May is Steffen “SK” Klenk. For those of you who don’t know him,  SK is one of the “veterans”, or you could say, one of the “originals”, he has been around since the beginning at River City CrossFit.  SK was there before I was there.  He is almost a mythical figure in our community.  Everyone who comes in during the day looks at the board to see what SK’s time was, because he sets the standard for the rest of the day. There are so many great things I could say about SK, about what an amazing athlete he is; about his strength, stamina, endurance and dedication.  Most of us are astounded when we see the stuff he pulls off at 6am before our alarm rings.  Sometimes you look at his time on the board and wonder how he could possibly do that many pullups or push-ups or burpees in so little time, but if you’ve seen him in action, you know he’s just a really great athlete with lots of heart.  But despite how inspiring he is as an athlete, personally, I think the best things about SK are his smile, and his humility.  Don’t worry SK, the double unders will come, and if ever you need someone to “test” your baking recipes, you know where to find me :-)

– Coach T.

Age: 37

Height: 5’7”

Weight: 165

What is your favourite exercise or workout? Anything with muscle-ups, pull-ups or HSPU.

What is your least favourite exercise or workout? Double Unders…so frustrating but I’ll figure them out one day.

Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself? I really enjoy cooking and baking.  For a while I was on a quest to make the ultimate cinnamon buns.

What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport? Anything outside…running, hiking, biking, skiing

What were you doing before CrossFit? Running

How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg? Fellow crossfitter John N invited me to RCCF one day.  Two weeks later I was a member.

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg? Physical changes and strength…the program works!  All that healthy living karma that surrounds CFW does rub off too.

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments? My first muscle-up.  Took me a year to get it.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg? We all have our strengths and weaknesses and some of the exercises can be frustrating and difficult, especially when starting out but give it your all to get through the WOD, one rep at a time.  It may feel like hell at the moment but you’ll be glad you did it when the WOD’s done.

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg? Those mornings when the alarm goes off at 5:20 and every muscle hurts from yesterday’s WOD, the fact that I make it to the gym for the 6:00AM class is the biggest accomplishment! Once I’m there, it gets easier.  Great coaches, great people, good times.

Lise & William

Lise is my cousin and I love her, in fact I was maid of honor at her wedding.  She’s always been in great shape and I had no doubt that she would love CrossFit. She may not know how much she inspires me.

I wanted to profile her story here because she, along the other CrossFit moms in our community, can make a real impact on us future moms. They’ve somehow managed to make me less afraid of childbirth! Lise has shown us that it is possible to stay in amazing shape throughout pregnancy.  She continued to train, with some modifications, right up until the day before William was born.  She was still doing unassisted pullups to the very end of her pregnancy!  Her last pre-baby workout was on Thursday evening; did some bench press, snatches, ring dips and sumo deadlift high pulls (!!?!?).  She went to work the next day, her last day of work before her planned maternity leave.  In the evening,  she made her way to her brother’s home, where she had a home birth planned.  The midwife was called around 8:30 and William was born just after midnight.  Both mom and baby are happy & healthy, no complications.   Lise, we are so proud and happy for you!  And I want to be just like you when I grow up…

– Coach T.

PS: Lise answered these questions before William was born.  She may have something to add since then…

Age: 32

Height: 5’4″

Weight: 110 (pre-pregnancy), 135.5 (36 weeks pregnant)

What is your favourite exercise or workout? Deadlift, box jump, GHD sit-up combo! There’s something about that combination that just makes me feel strong, plus it gives me lots of happy endorphins :-) .

What is your least favourite exercise or workout? It’s a tough call between wallballs and burpees. When we do them in a workout, I definitely prefer to get them out of the way at the beginning.

Tell us something interesting or surprising about yourself? I can still do a pull-up at 38 weeks pregnant. I was never able to do pull-ups until I started CrossFit and it seems unbelievable to be able to continue to do them now.

What is your favourite hobby, pastime or sport? I love camping and hiking, but not in the rain because I hate being cold. I am a nerd and I love to do crosswords.

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg? I feel more in control. CrossFit makes me feel like I can do anything. It’s probably because when people ask me about it, I get reactions like “Really? I could never do that!”

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments? We were doing a thruster ladder. No one had completed 15 rounds that day, so Coach Pascal said he’d buy breakfast for anyone who completed 15 rounds. Baby Bale and I will be collecting on our breakfast with Coach Pascal: at 36 weeks pregnant, I not only completed 15 rounds, but I went on and completed 16 rounds (136 thrusters – CFM Rx’d)! :-)

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg? Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. Ever. CrossFit is for all skill levels and all ages. Strive for improvement, not perfection and repeat: “I will promise to do my best. My best will vary from day to day. From hour to hour. From minute to minute. But in that minute, I will do the very best that I can.”

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg? Definitely continuing my CrossFit workouts throughout pregnancy. It’s been rewarding physically as far as coping with the changes to my body, but also psychologically as I prepare for the challenges ahead. I also read that babies of CrossFit Moms are better able to cope with the stress of birth. I compare giving birth to doing a CrossFit workout – it’s hard work, it gets progressively harder till the end, it’ only a minute of work at a time and you can cope because quitting is not an option and, in the end, you get a great reward.

Nicole "Tapout" Fillion

My relationship with CrossFit is a lot like the typical romantic relationship.  It starts off with those crazy “love at first sight” endorphins.  It’s all you think about and all you talk about. Eventually, the relationship grows beyond infatuation and you learn to love CrossFit for a whole host of new reasons.   I met our February member of the month during the infatuation phase.  We were at a mutual friend’s birthday bonfire and I can only imagine  raving about CrossFit non stop all night.  I ‘m sure all I talked about was this great new program I was doing with Brendan at River City CrossFit and how much fun it was.  Well, Nicole actually believed me and showed up!  Nicole might not know it, or admit it, but she is a real-life “firebreather”.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term, it’s what we call competitive Crossfitters who perform at elite levels.  Ironically, when she does compete, it is always “for fun” and “for the camaraderie”, as she humbly shines the spotlight on her fellow athletes.  It’s a shame since she really represents what CFW stands for. The fact is that Nicole possesses a level of maturity and dedication  to her training that most of us only dream of, and that is why she is a firebreather.  Congrats on all your accomplishments Tapout!

Age: 38

Height: 5.5

Weight: 136lbs

What were you doing before CrossFit? Distance running & cycling.  Marathons, duathlons and other races.

How did you find out about CrossFit Winnipeg? Sitting around a camp fire in Marchand MB at a girlfriends b-day party and I met Tania for the first time…within 5 mins of conversation I was SOLD!

What changes have you seen in yourself or your life since joining CrossFit Winnipeg? I would have to write a whole page on this topic so my comment to this is: Crossfit. Changes. Lives.!!!!

Do you have any special memorable CrossFit Winnipeg moments? Absolutely!!! From balling like a baby after an RCCF wod that took everything I had and more to finish….to literally jumping up and down for joy after my last “Fran” wod.  One of the things I love most about our community is that is doesn’t matter who you are, what you do, how much money you have or not have, how educated or fit you are…once you walk in the CFW doors everyone is treats each other equally and with respect.  Integrity, community and strength (mental & physical) is the foundation of what we do.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone just joining CrossFit Winnipeg? Don’t be shy, talk to people, do the best you can do on any given day, some days will be better than others.  Pushing past your fears successfully is the BEST feeling!  Stick to it as YOU. WILL. SEE. RESULTS.

What is your biggest accomplishment at CrossFit Winnipeg? After 2 and half years of wanting to clean up my diet and being unsuccessful…I finally did it!!! And I am loving every minute of it.  Eating clean feels amazing!
