Mobility & Recovery

The CrossFitter’s Missing Link: Mobility & Recovery

At CrossFit Winnipeg we’ve coached people from all kinds of backgrounds, including competitive athletes.  However, the majority of our members have busy lives with families and day jobs.  They train for health and longevity, not necessarily for the big bucks.  What the athletes realize but the rest of us often forget, is that the body requires a lot of “maintenance” to reach its full potential.

Professional athletes have access to massage therapists, athletic therapists, nutritionists, ice baths, compression clothing and all kind of other tools many regular folk don’t even bother with on a regular basis.   At CrossFit Winnipeg, we work hard, we run, jump, squat, throw and lift heavy.  We train like athletes, and we need to recover like athletes.

We often ask our athletes to get into situations and positions they may not find comfortable.  That discomfort often produces great improvements in strength and conditioning, but only if we can recover adequately between training sessions and achieve the level of mobility required to facilitate the movements.

To that end, we’ve added some hour long Mobility Classes and some Yoga classes to our weekly class schedule.  Sometimes that is not enough, if you need to work on some specific areas, here are some resources to check out.

The Amazing KStar’s Mobility WOD:

“Every human being should be able to perform basic maintenance on themselves. You know what to eat, how to train, and what to do if you have a cut; you should also know how to fix your tight hips, painful knees, and stiff shoulders, and how to make yourself faster and more powerful. It’s too much to mobilize everything, all the time, everyday. Start somewhere. The Mobility Wod should take you four to 10 minutes to complete. Do it everyday.”  –KStar

Eric Cressey has some good content on exercise technique, posture and mobility.  You’ll need to browse to find what you need but it’s worth a look.
