Registration for the Bridge City Beatdown in Saskatoon opens July 20th. The event takes place on September 7th and 8th, 2012 and is similar to our own FrostFit Games, with a category for Advanced athletes “The Beasts” and Novice Athletes “The Brutes”. It’s a really fun event and we’d like to send a contingent to represent CFW. We need both competitors and spectators/helpers!
If you are interested in competing, please post to the comments of this blog post or on the Forum and let us know.
- Are you going to watch or to compete?
- Which category you would like to compete in?
- Are you driving and if so, would you like to carpool and do you have a vehicle?
- Would you like us to program some extra work for you to do in preparation for the event?
- Would you be interested in some nutrition/recovery/mental prep work or group coaching for the event?
With this information we can get you prepared for the event and try to set up some carpooling and accommodations. Please visit our Competitions & Events Forum for more in depth discussion on the event, how to train for it, and travel arrangements. I’ve set up a section for the Bridge City Beatdown.

This weekend marks the 6th annual CrossFit Games, an awesome spectacle of fitness and community spirit. A few of our members have even made the trip out the California to take part in the festivities as spectators. Have fun!
If you’re staying home this weekend, you’ll want to catch at least the highlights. This article fromn CrossFit Aspire does a great job of pointing out why you should follow this weekend’s events. It might be humbling, but it’s also inspiring to see what these athletes can do. It also reminds us that we are part of a worldwide community, that we can go almost anywhere in the world and if we see someone wearing a CrossFit shirt, we can go up to them and ask them their Fran time, and they will know exactly what we’re talking about. In fact, they will know exactly how it feels to collapse on the floor at the end of the WOD.
I want to share some of my favourite highlights from the history of Games to get everyone in the mood…
The Games have evolved and changed over the years, as Dave Castro describes in this video.
I followed the Games in 2007 and 2008. You can find lots of footage online. Here’s the one video that had the most impact on me, 14year old Kallista Pappas cleaning & jerks her bodyweight 30 times….
I was lucky enough to see the transition from a small grassroots event in 2009 to a huge stadium event in 2010.When I think of the CrossFit Games, I don’t think Reebok, I think of the hot rubber mats of the and the steep sandy hill at Aromas. I remember walking around ‘The Ranch’ and mingling with the individual athletes and the CrossFit celebrities. This was 2009 and there was no ‘Open’. I remember Iceland Annie doing snatches and muscle-ups for the first time. I remember thinking: who is this Mikko Salo guy, quietly climbing the ranks? It was a wonderful experience that cannot be duplicated in a stadium.
I also remember the 2010 Games, the first to be held at the Home Depot Stadium. It also had its moments, Camille repping out muscle ups in the sunset on the first night, the wheelbarrow sandbag event, and of course the final 3 part surprise WOD, with Castro giving the athletes about 15 seconds of instructions followed by a quick 3, 2, 1 Go…
I wasn’t there for the 2011 Games but here are some highlights.
For those of you who were there, what were the most magical moments?

"Thanks to you and the coaches I had the chance to workout with during my stay in Winnipeg. (Your coaches) spent some quality time with me and gave some great coaching that immediately improved the movement for me... As a drop in I was so thankful and impressed. When I return to Winnipeg Crossfit Winnipeg will be my home away from home..."
