As a coach I often see subtle, and not so subtle, indications that our athletes have issues that may need to be addressed by a professional therapist.  Many of us are coming into CrossFit with old injuries, and CrossFit has a way of to exposing our weaknesses as athletes, whether those are related to spinal alignment, general mobility, posture, or musculature.    You may already have a physician, athletic therapist, physiotherapist or chiropractor that you see on a regular basis. For those of you who do not, we often refer out to practitioners we trust.  Now, we’ve found a way to make this service even more accessible and convenient to our members by having Dr. Ryan Stoyko on site at CrossFit Winnipeg.

Dr. Ryan Stoyko is a chiropractor with a passion for, and a great deal of experience with sports injury management and athletic training.   He graduated from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia and now practices at Aberdeen Chiropractic Clinic.  He has previously worked with bodybuilders, basketball teams, tennis players, swimmers, volleyball players, and general fitness training as a personal trainer.  His expertise extends to health, nutrition and supplementation for general wellness and for helping the body fight disease processes.  Dr. Stoyko uses rehabilitation, nutrition, adjustments and myofascial release methods to treat pain and encourage the body to function at its maximum capacity.  He also uses various methods to assess functional movements and training methods to improve training performance and results.

Dr. Stoyko will be available for onsite consultations and treatments every seond Monday evening from 5:30PM to 8:00PM, starting July 30th.  Dr. Stoyko has graciously agreed to offer initial assessments at no charge and subsequent visits will be $30 per session.  Please speak with reception to book your appointment in person or by calling 414-9348.  So if you have an injury, a mobility issue or even if you just need a bit of maintenance work, book your appointment today.

Physical Assessments

By Tania Tetrault Vrga

CrossFit Winnipeg would like to congratulate and thank all of our coaching staff on their continued professional development and their keen interest in learning new coaching skills and methods.

Congratulations in particular to Coaches Brad and Rich on their recent Assessment certification through the OPT Coaching Certification Program.  When Brad and Rich approached me with the intention of attending this certification, I was thrilled.  Having done this certification program back in 2010, I knew that it had tremendous value. We already use the concepts learned in this certification to design our progressions and to help clients determine the best training options to suit their situation and now we are happy to have Brad and Rich gain additional knowledge and experience in this area.

In order to complete the certification Brad and Rich will need to do some client assessments as practical homework and they may approach you as they will need some volunteers to help out with their practical assignments.  This would involve some postural assessments, functional movement screening and bodyfat skinfold measurements.  Keep in mind they will be doing this at no charge, as they are just starting out with these techniques. The usual rate for a full physical assessment with bodyfat measurment at CrossFit Winnipeg is $100 to $150 so this is a great deal!

If you would like to volunteer, please speak with Rich or Brad.
